JK Watchstore, who graciously allows us to use their pictures in this blog, has the new Rolex Explorer II Ref. 216570 with a white dial on stock. We have posted pictures of the version with the black dial before, and thought some of you may be interested in comparing the two.

So which strikes your fancy?

For me it is the white dial. Somehow I relate the Explorer II to Artic exploration, and white seems to be the appropriate color for that. Though admittedly, black is definitely the more functional one.

About Rolex. Rolex SA is a Swiss manufacturer of wristwatches and accessories founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. Rolex is the largest single luxury watch brand by far, producing over 2000 watches per day. Rolex is the best known and most sought after watch brand in the world.

Prefer white. Was that marketing campaign about Arctic expeditions? Logic was along the lines that if you are in the ice cave for God knows how long, you going to loose sense when is the day and when night. Hence 24 hour Explorer comes handy. Speleologists are more likely to use Suunto though. :D

Does this watch has same movement as GMT master?

While Rolex mention speleogists in a lot of its marketing for the Explorer II, I really do not know is people explore caves for period longer than 24 hours. Dual time is useful in the artic where day and night is not always defined by the rising and setting of the sun. At one point, Sir Ranulph Fiennes was a Ambassador for the Rolex Explorer II.

On the movement, the Explorer II uses a Rolex calibre 3187 movement. I think the GMT Master II uses the 3186 movement.

Have not paid much attention to this. By any chance do you know the diffence between the 3186 and 3187?

Just googled that 3187 has inhouse shock protection system Paraflex which replaces KIF shock system used in 3186.

I have the previous model in white dial. I have been told that is possible to change dials.
As to now, I still resist changing it into black.

@Tomaszek

I guess that would make then essentially the same movement?

@Anonymous

Make sure to have it done by a good service center if you do.

Functionally it would be the same. I guess...
